The Liquorice Sticks most of us grew up on just sugared awful things but did you know you get the liquorice flavour from the roots of the liquorice plant

As with all plants using pure spice and herbs provides health benefits, liquorice sticks are just that, pure root that when used in drinks or simmered will extract all the goodness in your tea or food

Being a root a good 10-20min simmer is needed to extract the full flavour

Liquorice Stick Powder - Quick Reference

What is it?: Dried liquorice root milled into powder for easier blending and faster extraction.

Flavour: Naturally sweet, earthy and woody with a lingering anise-like liquorice note.

Common uses: Tea blends, syrups, desserts, spice mixes, sauces and homemade confectionery.

Pairs well with: Fennel, anise, mint, ginger, citrus, pear, blackcurrant and chocolate.

How to use: Whisk into liquids or blend with dry ingredients. Simmer and strain when a clearer drink or syrup is required.

Compare with: Faster to release flavour than whole root sticks, but much gentler than concentrated pure liquorice juice.

Substitute: Whole liquorice root can be simmered instead, while pure juice sticks should be used only in tiny amounts.

Storage: Keep sealed and completely dry, as the powder readily absorbs moisture.

Good to know: The powdered root is useful in dry blends, but unlike confectionery liquorice it contains no added sugar.
